District Resident Sentenced for Insurance Fraud

(Washington, DC) On August 9, 2004, the Enforcement and Investigations Bureau of the DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) announced the sentencing of a District resident in DC Superior Court for Insurance Fraud.

Judy Anderson, a 44 year-old resident of the District was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit for Insurance Fraud, on June 15, 2004. Ms. Anderson’s arrest stemmed from her attempt to defraud the State Farm Insurance Company by filing a fraudulent burglary claim. In December of 2003, Ms. Anderson reported to the Metropolitan Police Department that her apartment had been burglarized and five items were stolen with the approximate value of $155.00. Anderson also filed a claim with State Farm and listed the theft of 23 items at a value of $12,000.

An investigation conducted by State Farm’s Special Investigation Unit and the DISB Enforcement and Investigations Bureau determined that Ms. Anderson could not document ownership of any of the items she listed in her claim to State Farm. DISB Insurance Fraud Investigator Garland Cheek interviewed Ms. Anderson who admitted that she did not own the items listed in her claim. Ms. Anderson stated that she attempted to collect on her fraudulent claim so she could use the money to clear a bad credit rating.

Ms. Anderson pleaded guilty to Attempted 2nd Degree Insurance Fraud and was sentenced to two years supervised probation by Judge Thomas J. Motley.
