(Washington, DC) Commissioner Lawrence H. Mirel of the District of Columbia Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR) is pleased to announce the implementation of electronic company producer appointment renewals. The District is one of the first in the Nation (Oklahoma is the only other jurisdiction) to provide this Internet-based service, which will allow companies operating in the District to renew their producers via the Internet. While the program is currently in place, it will officially begin accepting appointments on March 15, 2004. The process itself will be done in association with the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) via their web site www.licenseregistry.com. By utilizing this electronic process insurers will be able to renew their appointments and to terminate any appointments prior to March 15. It is important to note that appointments added between January 1 and March 15 will not need to be renewed this year.
Mirel stated, “This program represents DISR responding to the needs of the industry without compromising our regulatory authority. With this process in place, we now have the ability to allow insurers to renew appointments in a more timely and efficient manner. In addition, by implementing this system, DISR staff will be able to process demographic updates and renewals in real-time, gaining greater control over the process.”
Currently, there are over 35,000 insurance producers licensed in the District of Columbia. In 2003, DISR manually processed over 114,000 insurance company appointment renewals. DISR estimates move than 130,000 renewals will be processed this year.
This program was developed in conjunction with the State-Based-Systems (SBS) Initiative sponsored by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
